Deradicalisation and disengagement assistance come into play when the degree of radicalisation is very advanced and the risk exists that young people will be a danger to themselves and others, such as by travelling to a war zone or after returning from a war zone. Due to its specialisation on this topic from the outset, Violence Prevention Network has years of experience in dealing with radicalised young people and understands how to speak to members of these scenes, how to establish dialogues with them, how to motivate them to change, and how to trigger processes of becoming distant from inhumane ideologies. In addition to direct work with radicalised individuals, the parents of these young people are also given targeted advice and are included in the deradicalisation work.

Advice Centre Baden-Württemberg

The main focus of the Advice Centre Baden-Württemberg is to intervene in the radicalization processes. Targeted de-radicalisation activities are aimed at people who tend to travel to war zones, return to Germany as “foreign fighters” and/or are searching for an escape from extremist ideologies.

The goals of the Advice Centre Bavaria are the prevention of radicalisation and the de-radicalisation of youths. The objective consists in directly addressing young vulnerable people who are part of the extreme Salafist scene and initiating disengagement processes.

Advice Centre Hesse

In 2014, Violence Prevention Network was able to start the Advice Centre Hesse in Frankfurt. The Advice Centre is part of the Hessian Prevention Network against Salafism and is funded by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior. The Advice Centre bundles all prevention and intervention measures of Violence Prevention Network in Hesse, but is currently dedicated mainly to deradicalisation. Since July 2014, parents and other relatives of radicalised individuals have been able to receive advice here, and the disengagement assistance of radicalised Islamist youth has begun.

Advice Centre Saxony

The goal of the Advice Centre Saxony is to provide education about extremism and recruitment strategies as well as to develop strategies for youth when signs of radicalisation arise in peer groups. Other objectives are to demystify the phenomenon of jihadism and to increase the ability of young people to distance themselves from extremism.

CROSSROADS

The Berlin-centric counselling and intervention project Crossroads has been offering measures for the prevention of radicalisation or for the de-radicalisation of young people since the summer of 2014 specific to the domain of right-wing extremism. The objective consists in addressing young people who are at risk of radicalisation or who have already undergone a process of radicalisation on-site and initiating processes of withdrawal.

Family Counselling in the context of Islamism

The intention of Family Counselling is to support parents of “foreign fighters” or youths at risk to be radicalised and guide them in their communication process with their radicalised children and prevent the recruitment of vulnerable youths. It is designed to support parents during the absence of their offspring as “foreign fighters” and to support parents within the return process of their radicalised children. The project is coordinated by the Bundesamt für Migration und Flüchtlinge [Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF)]. Violence Prevention Network has been able to offer advice to parents or relatives of radicalised young people in Bavaria, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate.

KOMPASS Advice Centre

Since April 2015, Violence Prevention Network has been carrying out work in Berlin in the area of de-radicalisation in cooperation with the Senate Office for Home Affairs. The Kompass Advice Centre aims to dissuade people affiliated to Islamic-motivated extremism from their propensity for violence and to prevent departures to destinations in civil war-torn regions in Syria and Iraq. Similarly, work with so-called returnees is a component of the programme.
