NetzXtreme

An online service for parents to help them recognise early signs of Islamist online radicalisation among young people

Digital spaces offer young people a wide range of opportunities – but at the same time, they can also become a place where extremist content is disseminated, and young people are specifically targeted. The NetzXtreme project helps parents to recognise such developments at an early stage and to be able to assess them confidently.

The aim of the project is to comprehensively empower parents: they gain more confidence in their role as educators, develop a better understanding of the risks in the digital space and expand their media literacy. At the same time, the programme helps to improve communication with their own children and to talk more openly about online experiences and parents’ concerns. This is to be achieved through concrete, everyday tips that help parents to classify social media content, recognise problematic developments at an early stage and respond appropriately.

In order to reach the target group of parents in the best possible way, the project is developing two coordinated products: An e-learning course conveys key content in compact units of no more than five minutes in an interactive and everyday manner, e.g. using typical warning signs, illustrative case studies and specific recommendations for action that parents can try out directly in their everyday lives. An accompanying handout summarises the most important aspects in simple language. It can be used independently of the e-learning course and refers specifically to the content of the online learning platform.

The materials are currently being developed. Publication is planned for the end of the third quarter of 2026.
