Islam in Thuringia: Among the approximately 2.1 million citizens in Thuringia, at least 8,000 people are of the Muslim faith. Alongside the larger communities in Jena, Nordhausen and Erfurt, there are smaller ones in Eisenach, Weimar, Gera and Mühlhausen. Muslim daily life is also slowly taking root in rural areas. However, there are occasionally signs of hostility towards Muslims in Thuringia.
The measures taken by the advice centre aim to foster a shared basic understanding of humanist principles such as democracy, non-violence, human rights and tolerance, and to help people recognise these as values inherent to their own worldview or religion. At the same time, the aim is to preventively counteract fundamentalism and radicalisation.
For interested organisations, the Advice Centre for Islam and the Prevention of Islamism in Thuringia offers coaching sessions and training events on the subject of Islam, as well as prevention workshops in schools. Parents, relatives and caregivers can contact the advice centre if they have any questions regarding (suspected) radicalisation within their family or friends. In cases where radicalisation is in its early stages, the centre’s staff implement targeted deradicalisation measures.
