Safe and Active Online (SIAN)

The internet offers many opportunities for information, exchange and social participation. At the same time, digital spaces are becoming increasingly complex: disinformation, conspiracy narratives, AI-generated content and extremist messages are spreading more and more via social networks and messaging services. Older people often have less prior digital experience and therefore face a particular challenge in distinguishing credible content from manipulative content. The SIAN project specifically addresses these challenges and empowers people aged 60 and over to use digital media safely, critically and independently. The project provides knowledge about digital platforms, promotes media and news literacy, and helps participants to recognise disinformation, anti-democratic content and attempts at radicalisation online at an early stage. At the same time, it highlights the opportunities offered by digital participation and demonstrates ways in which people can stay informed and play an active role in social debates.

To this end, SIAN combines various educational offerings: short and easy-to-understand online learning modules, digital talks with opportunities for discussion, an interactive travelling exhibition in Berlin’s neighbourhoods, in-depth on-site workshops, as well as regular updates and practical tips via a messaging app. All offerings are accessible and relevant to everyday life. Based on an initial needs assessment, they are specifically tailored to the needs of older people.

Interactive online learning resources

Short, easy-to-understand learning modules, so-called microlearnings, provide practical knowledge on topics such as: recognising fake news and disinformation; understanding AI-generated images and videos; unravelling algorithms and recommendation mechanisms; identifying manipulation strategies used by extremist actors; using messaging services and social media safely; and opportunities for democratic participation in the digital space. The learning resources can be accessed at any time, free of charge, and can be easily integrated into everyday life. They are specifically tailored to the needs of older users and combine text, videos and interactive exercises.

Travelling exhibition in Berlin neighbourhoods

A multimedia travelling exhibition will be on display at various locations across Berlin. Through interactive stations, illustrative examples and hands-on activities, it provides knowledge about digital communication platforms, the formation of opinions online and how to deal with problematic content. The exhibition brings the topic directly into the everyday lives of older people and creates low-threshold access for those who have so far taken part in few educational programmes in the field of digitalisation.

To accompany the exhibition, workshops will be held, addressing specific questions and challenges from the participants’ everyday lives. Together, they will analyse current examples, develop strategies to combat disinformation and discuss ways to get involved in democratic engagement. The workshops not only strengthen knowledge and skills but also boost confidence in using digital media and encourage dialogue.

Information straight to your smartphone

Via a messenger channel, interested participants receive regular updates, practical tips, information on new developments and short exercises to strengthen their media literacy. This ensures that participants remain connected to the project even between events and learning opportunities, enabling them to continually expand their knowledge.

Talks and digital discussion groups

Online events offer the opportunity to jointly analyse current developments and discuss questions. Experts provide background knowledge on disinformation, radicalisation, extremist narratives and digital participation. Finally, there is time for discussion, sharing experiences and addressing questions arising from the participants’ everyday lives.

SIAN is aimed in particular at Berliners aged 60 and over, people transitioning from working life to retirement, and those who wish to expand their digital skills and feel more confident online. At the same time, family members, neighbours, volunteers, organisations, libraries, community centres and other key influencers are also involved. This creates a network that strengthens digital literacy, social cohesion and democratic resilience.
